“Climate Alarm”  small verge clock with bell turning on the hour. 30cm high x20cm long x 15cm wide, stainless & bronze. 2020

Anton Hasell is a professional artist living in Central Victoria. He has completed a number of significant public-space artworks in Melbourne and around Australia that include the ‘Federation Bells Carillon’ in Birrarung Marr Park, and the invention, casting and tuning of the 10 difference-tone bells for the Longnow Foundation’s 10,000 - Year project in the USA.

Much of Anton’s artistic practice is based in computer-based design of musical bells. Inspired by the 10,000-year Clock project, Anton has recently been developing a series of mechanical clock and bell sculptures that explore a philosophy of the paradoxical. Central to this investigation is the challenge of climate change.

Artist Biographical statement

I have 57 years’ experience as a sculptor, working with clay, wood and stone, forged and welded metalwork and mixed media.  As a sculptor I aim to produce artworks that incorporate not only the process involved but display a sound knowledge of my subject matter.  Each work is a result of considerable research and preparation.  I aim to produce artworks that reveal my love for nature and present said works in such a way as to enhance my choice of medium.  My works have been exhibited Australia wide and internationally.  Numerous commissions adorn both public and private spaces throughout Victoria.

My career as a boilermaker working with steel has been a large part of my development as a disciplined maker.  More recently my work has moved away from the industrial environment, and I find that creating sculpture allows me to further explore and enjoy my ideas with mild steel, cor-ten and stainless steel without boundaries and
limitations. Time spent with a pencil lost in a sketchbook, or in my Macedon studio between the welder and grinder, fill me with excitement and unlimited possibilities. My work explores simple geometric shapes, evocative lines and abstract forms. Robust yet fluid, I seek equilibrium in my work.
